Travelling Irrigation on Undulating Terrain

Elevation Change Forces Extra Regulators, Drives and Oversizing to Hold Nozzle Pressure

Travelling irrigation systems — hard-hose reels, soft-hose travellers, centre pivots and linear moves — are reliable on flat ground. On undulating terrain, elevation continuously shifts the pumping demand. Each metre of rise adds about 9.81 kPa of static head. Across 20–30 metres of variation, nozzle pressure can swing 200–300 kPa, shifting application rate by 30–50% and throw diameter by 15–25%: over-watering and runoff in low zones, moisture stress on ridges. The usual response is to size the pump for worst-case total dynamic head and waste the excess through per-nozzle regulators. A variable-frequency drive only partly corrects this. The pump stays on a fixed head–flow curve, the control loop lags each terrain change, and suction-head demand rises where cavitation risk is greatest. Field studies found drives saved less than US$0.25 per hour on rolling land — not enough to recover capital cost over a 15-year life.

The MPR™ (Multi-Phase Rotor) pump addresses that problem directly. It operates on a pump plane rather than a fixed curve, so head and flow can be adjusted largely independently. A single pressure sensor holds nozzle pressure across the full elevation profile, without trading pressure for flow or chasing a moving target. Its constant-flow outlet can also stabilise the retrieval turbine on reel machines, and it self-primes from dry, removing re-priming delays between sets. Application depth stays uniform: less runoff in low zones, less stress on ridges, and rates at or below soil infiltration capacity, limiting nutrient leaching. The station is simpler — terrain-compensation drives minimised, regulators reduced or removed, fewer sensors — with an estimated 15–25% lower annual energy cost than a worst-case-sized conventional pump.
